BAGGS, Wyo. — A law enforcement officer was injured and a suspect died following a shooting incident near Baggs, Wyoming, on Monday, prompting a large-scale response from agencies across Wyoming and Colorado.
According to Carbon County Sheriff Alex Bakken, the incident began after authorities received reports of an armed individual in the town of Baggs, located near the Wyoming-Colorado border. What followed was a rapidly evolving situation that involved multiple law enforcement agencies, a vehicle pursuit, and an exchange of gunfire that ultimately left a deputy wounded and the suspect deceased.
Authorities said the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a man carrying a firearm. As deputies attempted to address the situation, shots were fired, resulting in injuries to a Carbon County deputy. Additional details regarding how the deputy was wounded have not yet been released.
The injured deputy was transported to Intermountain Health St. Mary’s Regional Hospital in Grand Junction, Colorado, for medical treatment. Officials have not publicly disclosed the extent of the deputy’s injuries. The Moffat County Sheriff’s Office noted that the deputy has family members in Grand Junction, where he is receiving care.
Following the initial confrontation, the suspect fled the area in a vehicle. Wyoming Highway Patrol troopers and additional Carbon County deputies initiated a pursuit along Highway 780 north of Baggs. During the pursuit, authorities reported that the suspect again opened fire on law enforcement officers before leaving the roadway.
The vehicle eventually came to a stop off the highway, leading to a significant tactical response from local, state, and regional law enforcement agencies.
Numerous agencies from both Wyoming and Colorado responded to assist, including the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office, Craig Police Department, Colorado State Patrol, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, Routt County Sheriff’s Office, Grand Junction Police Department, Mesa County Sheriff’s Office, and Steamboat Springs Police Department.
Specialized units were also deployed to the scene. The Northwest Regional SWAT Team and the Sweetwater County SWAT Team assisted with securing the area and assessing the ongoing threat. Authorities utilized drone technology to safely evaluate the situation before approaching the suspect’s vehicle.
According to officials, drones revealed that the suspect was deceased inside the vehicle. Sheriff Bakken confirmed that the suspect died at the scene but did not provide additional details regarding the circumstances surrounding the death.
The incident remains under active investigation by the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation, which will be responsible for determining the sequence of events and reviewing all aspects of the case.
In statements released following the incident, law enforcement officials expressed gratitude for the cooperation demonstrated by responding agencies and emphasized the importance of regional partnerships during critical emergencies.
The Moffat County Sheriff’s Office thanked neighboring jurisdictions and community members for their support, noting that incidents of this nature underscore the dedication of law enforcement personnel who respond to dangerous situations in order to protect the public and assist fellow officers.
